2024 Interns have fun in a private visit to the Dresden Science Museum in an Intern Community Event

Research Internships

Your Science Era Starts Here ✨

IMPRS Student Summer Research Internships

Applications are currently closed.

📻 Stay tuned for future updates!

Each year, the IMPRS offers a small number of research internships to outstanding Bachelor and Master students from outside Dresden who are curious about academic science — and considering whether a PhD is right for them. You’ll join a research group, contribute directly to ongoing projects, and experience being integrated into a collaborative, international research institute.

Just as with our PhD application procedure, our internship call is a joint enterprise with our partner program, the DIGS-ILS.

This is a significant advantage for applicants: With a single application, you apply to RGLs in both the IMPRS and the DIGS-ILS!

No matter which Research Group hosts you, this will be a fully research-based internshipno coursework, just science! You’ll work on a defined research question with guidance from both senior and early-career scientists in your host group.

Who Can Apply?

We’re excited to see applications from students:

  • Currently enrolled at a university outside Dresden

  •  MSc/BSc in Biology, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or Mathematics

  • In the final year(s) of a Bachelor’s or already enrolled in a Master’s program

  • With excellent academic performance, genuine curiosity about testing out lab life

  • With strong English communication skills

Note: Bachelor students should have completed at least 4 semesters before the internship starts. It’s important that interns remain officially enrolled at their home university throughout the internship period

When & How It Works

  • Timing: Internships last for about ~3 months. They can be scheduled flexibly with the hosting reserach group (not limited to summer).

  • Funding: Selected interns receive a monthly stipend of around 1000EUR to fund your stay with us. We also support you with travel, visa, and housing arrangements.

  • Community: Interns are embedded into both their research group and the wider Dresden scientific environment — a vibrant, interdisciplinary community.

How to Apply

Use our online application portal whilst the application is open! There, we ask you to tell us about:

  • Your academic background

  • Your scientific interest and motivations

  • What you hope to learn during an internship

You’ll also be able to rank project preferences and upload required documents. Applications are reviewed by the Head of Academic Office and subsequentially all group leaders, with short interviews held online.

We encourage you to apply, even if your research group leader of preference isn’t explicitly searching for an intern. It’s easy to motivate an RGL to take on a young researcher with an exceptional profile and interest!

Final decisions and formal offers are issued by the Head of Academic Office. Expect responses by early March.

As with PhD applications, we strongly discourage you from using LLMs to write your application. With such a high n of applications, we often see the same sentences over and over again. Candidates with a high probability of acceptance demonstrate genuine interest, and a realistic, appropriately-focused interest in the research going on in our community.
